Dear Senator Hillary Clinton:

Open Letter to Presidential Candidate: Senator Hillary Clinton

We have 47 million uninsured Americans and you can immediately make a difference by introducing a SENATE RESOLUTION whereby the uninsured pays only what Medicare or Blue Cross PPO allow. At present, the uninsured is made to pay 5 to 10 times more than what Medicare or Blue Cross pay. Is it fair? An uninsured pregnant lady, small business owner, recently said to me, "I don't want Medi-Cal. I just want to pay what is fair for my prenatal care." I greatly admire this lady. Another patient said, "Doctor, I just want the truth."

Uninsured Americans, between the ages of 50 to 64, are easily worth over a trillion dollars (home equity), but they cannot afford the absurd healthcare costs associated with the "industry" or insurers. The hospitals know that homeowners with no insurance can be "cash cows" once they fall ill. They have to pay up or go bankrupt.

To no avail, I made this same plea to Mr. David Dreier. In the case of Mr. Dreier, he receives large sums of money from the hospital lobby (American Hospital Association), Drug Makers, AMA and Insurance Companies/HMOs.

It is my proposal that all health related lobbyists should be given a time card so that we, the people, can know how much time they get to spend (access) with our policy makers and Congress.

There are many elements that must be addressed that include how drug companies influence the FDA. For each penny the drug makers give the FDA, Americans are made to pay 100's of dollars. The FDA must be fully funded by the people and must in no manner be connected to the drug makers. Why? The FDA just approved Novartis' new drug for hypertension, ALISKIREN (TEKTURNA). What is wrong with this drug, a direct renin inhibitor? In animal studies, this drug caused tumors of the colon. As a result, the FDA has required for Novartis to conduct before-and-after colonoscopy studies by 2009. Can you imagine the cost? Today, we have excellent anti-hypertensives that are no longer "brand" and can treat over 99% of patients. So why take a risk? I am certain that Novartis (drug maker) has developed its marketing plan to doctors. We have no public mechanism to inform patients of the risks associated with this new drug. At least my patients will not be exposed to ALISKIREN.

My technical data can reduce our drug costs by over 100 billion dollars per year. But guess what? I had to develop a complex defense system in order to protect myself against the many threats I receive. Though it is a paradox, I am thankful that we have our second constitutional amendment. I am also thankful to the Alpha Omega 65 group.

Is our democracy for sale? It may cost over half a billion dollars to elect our next president. We can use our much-regarded Public Broadcasting System (PBS) and NPR to have political candidates present their stance in a forum that is of, by and for the people.

We become physicians because the poor and uninsured so far have granted us, willingly, the right to practice on them. What if the poor were to charge interns and students of medicine for the privilege to learn and practice on them (often at great patient peril)?

For now, I hereby request that you introduce an emergency resolution to the Senate whereby all physicians, clinics and hospitals can only charge the uninsured what Medicare or Blue Cross PPO allows. The billing system is already in place; you just have to activate it. Later, I will lobby for better reimbursement to primary care providers.

Respectfully,
