Unumprovident Denial Phone Call Part One

This is a recording of John's denial phone call from Unumprovident (now Unum Group) refusing to pay his disability claim.

Unum claims handlers are under extreme pressure to find any way to deny claims, even if it means destroying records and, in this case, falsifying records in order to support a denial.

Here are some very disturbing details about the phone call:

Unum had no communication with John's doctors even though the claims handler said she had their support to uphold the denial. She lied. Dr. Pretorius couldn't talk to the Unumprovident doctors because Unumprovident refused to give him a medical release form required under HIPA (a form which they had) and Dr. Morgan didn't talk to Unumprovident at all. The claims handler tried to bluff her way through a denial by pretending to have records which didn't exist, in this example, as well as others. This sort of lying and misrepresentation via telephone to defraud a claimant is a felony under federal wire fraud statutes.
