Many Homeowners Are Unaware All Homes Have Some Flood Risk

Video powered by Metacafe

FEMA and the Insurance Information Institute are Urging All Homeowners to Consider Flood Insurance People who live near the coast or next to a stream are not the only homeowners threatened by floods during a hurricane. FEMA and the Insurance Information Institute say those who live further inland should be concerned too because wind and rain from hurricanes can cause massive inland flooding. In fact, 25% of flood losses occur to homeowners with low flood risk. Most of these floods are the result of runoff during a heavy downpour. Often there is no place for the water to go, the rain falls too fast for the ground to absorb or the ground is too dry. Just a few inches of water in the basement can cause $8-10,000 in damage. Unfortunately, many homeowners mistakenly think floods are covered under their homeowners, but to be covered for flooding, you need a policy from the National Flood Insurance Program. This policy can be purchased through your insurance agent. If you would like to get an idea of how much a policy would cost and what your home's flood risk is, visit the National Flood Insurance Program site at www.floodsmart.gov Produced for Insurance Information Institute

Event-Flood in New Rochelle, NY -Interviews-Clip#9

Twelve videoclips and information pertain to flooding in a section of New Rochelle, NY (a small city in Westchester County, NY - north of Manhattan) near the center of town that happened mainly as a result of several inches of rain during a nor-easter on the weekend including Sunday 4/15/07. The videos were taken on Tuesday 4/17/07 by Frank Sisco with the verbal permission of the individuals. The main intent was to provide a record of what happened and the thoughts and feelings of the individuals, including an expression of their hopefulness, sense of community and remaining needs. Organizations such as FEMA (Federal Emergency Assistance Agency) are already helping with grants and low-interest loans, and various insurance companies and governmental agencies, but other organizations and individuals are invited to help with money, assistance, and other ways. For more information, please contact Frank Sisco at 914.740.4422 or by email to ideasmoney@aol.com. Frank Sisco will gather the responses to this appeal and provide them to the City of New Rochelle, Office of the Mayor Noam Bramson, or other designated party. (Also for a lot more info (including archived items, hearing notices, info about disaster aid, etc.) go to the City of New Rochelle website at www.newrochelleny.com and to Frank Sisco's website at www.VideoVoom.com, then look under the "Events" category and click on the link for "Disasters."
